Natural Skin Care for Creatives

As creatives, our skin takes a beating with all the (sometimes toxic) supplies we use to make our creations. Paint, clay, glue, resins, varnishes (the list goes on) are hard on our skin and bodies. It takes only seconds for skin to absorb what it comes into contact with. With all the harsh products we use, it is important to treat our skin with products whose ingredients are natural and recognizable. Natural products will not only nourish both your skin and body, but is better for the environment.
Our ancestors mixed berries and milk into facial pastes, used olives as an exfoliant, applied honey to the skin, nourished with moringa, salts and clay, and used cucumber and aloe vera to cleanse and refresh skin. These natural ingredients were abundant and provided results that didn’t harm the body. When synthetic ingredients became popular, because of its quick results, natural products were seen as a thing of the past. But using products with synthetic ingredients can cause more damage over the long term.
A benefit of using natural skin care products is that you will avoid synthetic chemicals that you may not have heard and cannot find information on. Watch for ingredients in your products such as Sodium Laureth, Formaldehyde, Phalates, Petroleum, Parabens, Petroleum or Fragrances. Carcinogens can harm the reproductive, endocrine, and immune system and build up over time. Some of these ingredients are also harmful to the environment. Among the ingredients that cause the most harm to our planet include sunscreen with oxybenzone, synthetic fragrances, triclosan, plastic and exfoliating beads.
All natural creams, lotions, butters, and cleansers contain pure ingredients. Natural ingredients, such as coconut, rose, calendula, shea, aloe and manuka can allow you to rest easy knowing they will not harm your skin but may be beneficial by containing vitamins and cause less allergic reactions.
